Q: What is Thoughtful Leadership?
A: Thoughtful Leadership is a new approach that helps leaders develop the skills they need to effectively influence others. Thoughtful Leadership proposes that each of us has an instinctive tendency to use our preferred leadership behaviors. These work perfectly in situations that fit our preferences, but may be ineffective or even destructive in situations that don't fit.
The Thoughtful Leadership model divides leadership into seven types;
- Celebrity
- Commander
- Manager
- Scientist
- Coach
- Confidante
- Rogue
Consciously using these types together in an effective manner is the hallmark of a thoughtful leader.

Q: How is Thoughtful Leadership different?

Being able to influence others without the use of authority is becoming an essential skill in modern life. Thoughtfully using the seven types gives you an ability to influence others using a range of techniques, rather than the one or two you prefer.

Q: How was Thoughtful Leadership developed?
A: Thoughtful Leadership is the result of ten years of research and practice that started with the observation that effective leadership in practice often did not match the popular perception of leadership. Dominant, assertive personalities seem to create more problems than they solve, and the most effective leaders are often humble and reflective. This conflicts with the popular perception of effective leaders as 'alpha' type personalities who are confident and in charge.
This phenomena was first observed in groups of undergraduate business students given a ten week task. This was validated over time in other settings as well, such as large banks, large public hospitals, multi-national utilities, small and medium businesses, sporting organisations, and community groups.
Analysis of effective leadership as it happened in these settings highlighted a number of key points:
- Effective leadership is not necessarily linked to position, authority or hierarchy
- Effective leadership is often subtle, hidden and unrecognized by others
- Effective leadership involves impeccable timing - knowing when and how to ask the right question, for example
The Thoughtful Leadership Model captures the obvious and subtle skills of effective leaders. This can be used to highlight a range of effective behaviours that can be combined to create effective leadership.
